Toyota’s midship roadster MR2, a beloved model that spanned three generations from 1984 to 2007, is returning after a 20-year hiatus. Known for its compact size, lightweight body, and agile handling, the MR2 carved out a niche in the sports car market, offering performance unmatched by many competitors in its price range. With this iconic model’s revival, car enthusiasts eagerly anticipate what the new MR2 will look like and what powertrain options will be available.

Although details about the successor are still under wraps, rumors suggest that Toyota is exploring multiple options for the new MR2, including a pure internal combustion engine model, a hybrid, and an electric variant. As excitement builds, virtual renderings have started circulating, giving fans a glimpse into what the new MR2 could look like. These speculative designs are already drawing attention, but only Toyota officials know what features will truly make it to production.

A Supra-Inspired Design with a Low-Slung Silhouette

On October 27, automotive virtual rendering specialist YouTuber PoloTo posted a rendering of the new Toyota MR2. The MR2 in the rendering is characterized by its appearance, which largely resembles the Toyota Supra. The slim triangular headlamps create a powerful feeling, and the trapezoidal bumper vents and sharp air curtains add a sense of speed.

As a midship sports car, the low ride height adds to the style. The low windshield and body ratio are unique, and the DLO line, which gets lower as it goes to the back, may obstruct the view of the passengers. The vents on the bonnet suggest that the air conditioner compressor will be placed separately in the front. The rocker panel, which appears to be made of carbon, also adds to the sporty feel.

Convertible Roots, But a Potential Hardtop Twist

The previous generations of the MR2 offered various convertible options, including targa tops and soft tops. However, the new rendering presents a coupe-like design, with a hardtop roof contrasting with the body color. The hardtop features an electric opening and closing system, moving away from the lightweight roadster format. However, some have speculated that the roof could be manually removable, retaining some of the MR2’s open-air driving appeal.

At the rear, the design showcases a unique engine hood split into two parts, drawing attention to its distinctive look. The lack of a rear window could restrict rear visibility, though Toyota might incorporate a digital rearview mirror and a rear camera for better visibility. A low, wide spoiler and dual muffler tips add to the aggressive styling, while the integrated tail lamp with a flowing curve adds a modern touch to the car’s design.

FT-Se Concept: The MR2’s Potential Electric Future?

Toyota’s FT-Se concept, unveiled last year, has been floated as a potential successor to the MR2. Initially planned as an electric vehicle, the FT-Se was scheduled for release by the end of 2025. However, with the current slowdown in electrification, the new MR2 will likely retain a conventional engine. Some reports suggest the car could feature a 3-cylinder turbo engine based on the GR Corolla. However, others speculate that a more powerful 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo could produce over 400 horsepower, with Toyota claiming it could reach up to 600 horsepower.

A four-wheel-drive system may be included to ensure stable handling, particularly for high-performance driving. With a price tag of around $90,000, the new MR2 is set to compete with rivals like the Lotus Emira and Porsche 718, positioning itself as an exciting and affordable option for sports car enthusiasts.
