Are all luxury models European?
Japanese vehicles are no slouches either
Introducing three luxury models from Toyota
When you think of luxury cars, European manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz, Bentley, and Rolls-Royce often come to mind, with their ultra-premium vehicles commanding awe and admiration. These automakers have long dominated the luxury vehicle market, setting the standard for opulence and craftsmanship. However, while Europe has long held a monopoly on high-end luxury cars, Japanese automakers like Toyota are making significant strides with models that can hold their own in the luxury segment. Three standout Toyota models exemplify the brand’s foray into true luxury.
1. Toyota Crown Sedan: 70 Years of Legacy
The Toyota Crown, which was launched in 1955, has evolved over 16 generations to become one of Japan’s most revered luxury sedans. Initially designed as a mass-produced model for taxis, the Crown transformed over time into a sophisticated luxury vehicle. The sedan’s long and storied history was further cemented in 2022 when Toyota rebranded the Crown as a sub-brand, introducing new models like the Crown crossover, sport, and estate variants.
The flagship Crown sedan boasts an imposing size, with a width of 1,890 mm (74.4 inches) and a length exceeding 5 meters (16.4 feet). This substantial presence and elegant silhouette make the Crown a true symbol of luxury, evoking the grandeur of its long history while embracing modern design.
2. Toyota Century: The Pinnacle of Japanese Luxury
The Toyota Century, often called the “Rolls-Royce of Japan,” is the top model in Toyota’s sedan lineup. First introduced in 1967, it is handcrafted by skilled artisans and remains the most prestigious model in Toyota’s portfolio. With its understated yet stately appearance, the Century has long been associated with Japan’s elite, including being used as the official vehicle for the Emperor and Prime Minister.
The Century’s exclusivity is reflected in its production numbers; the current third-generation model targets a limited sales volume of just 50 units per month. Last year, Toyota expanded the Century lineup to include an SUV model, breaking tradition and adding more spacious second-row seating, further emphasizing luxury and comfort. The Century remains a symbol of understated wealth and craftsmanship, and its status as Japan’s premier luxury vehicle is unmatched.
3. Toyota Vellfire Executive Lounge: The Unrivaled Luxury Minivan
The best vehicle in terms of spacious interior space is the minivan. As the popularity of luxury minivans is increasing, the Vellfire is also attracting attention. The Vellfire is a separate model name of the Alphard sold by Netz dealers, and there were rumors that it would be merged into the Alphard when the Netz dealer network was integrated. However, it maintained its status thanks to overwhelming sales compared to the Alphard.
The Executive Lounge, the top-of-the-line model among the Vellfire lineup, offers an interior as good as the Crown and Century sedans introduced earlier. The exclusive lounge seats, comparable to first-class airplane seats, are a basic element of the luxury model. In addition, the large display comparable to a home TV and the refrigerator are exclusive features not found even in the Century.
