Ford Revises Electrification Strategy
Mysterious Electric Sports Car Revealed
Cheers for Stunning Design
Ford has made significant revisions to its electrification strategy, announcing on October 21 that it will cancel plans for an electric three-row SUV and delay its electric vehicle (EV) roadmap. The company has reduced its EV investment from 40% to 30%, pushing the launch of its new electric pickup truck, the T3, to the second half of 2027, a full year later than initially planned.
This shift comes in response to a challenging profitability landscape as Ford grapples with mounting losses. Industry insiders report that Ford is currently losing up to $100,000 for every electric vehicle it sells. As a result, Ford is recalibrating its approach to EV production to improve its bottom line and regain competitiveness in the rapidly evolving market.
Second-Generation Mustang Mach-E Coupe Slated for 2026
Ford had also planned to introduce the second-generation Mustang Mach-E coupe version in June 2026, but this timeline is now in jeopardy. While production of the current Mach-E will end in June 2026, there are concerns that Ford’s delays in implementing its new EV platform could push back the launch of the next-generation model. One possibility is that Ford could opt to use the same platform as the current Mach-E to meet the original production schedule.
Rendering of New Electric Vehicle
Making good use of Gran Torino’s features
Despite the setbacks in Ford’s electrification timeline, excitement is building for new electric vehicle concepts. A recent rendering by a virtual designer has caught the attention of car enthusiasts, imagining an electric revival of the classic Ford Gran Torino. The original Gran Torino, produced from 1968 to 1979, was a popular mid-sized passenger car known for its long hood and short deck proportions, and the rendering brings those classic features to life in an electric format.
Although it’s unlikely that Ford will revive the Gran Torino as an EV in the near future—given the Mustang’s prominent position in the brand’s lineup—this concept offers a glimpse of what could be possible if Ford’s EV plans evolve. Should the company solidify its new EV platform, a Gran Torino EV could eventually be part of its lineup.
Project T3 Underway
Electric Vehicle Launch Targeted for Late 2026
Ford is also making strides with its Project T3, an initiative to develop a low-cost, mid-size electric pickup truck. Using a newly developed, affordable electric vehicle platform by its Skunk Works team, Ford plans to launch the first vehicle based on this platform in the U.S. by late 2026 or early 2027. Moreover, the company aims to introduce an advanced technology model for the commercial van market in 2026, continuing the success of its E-Transit van.
As Ford recalibrates its electrification plans, the company aims to expand its presence in the EV market with more affordable models, including the highly anticipated Project T3 electric pickup. While delays in the overall EV strategy may be disappointing for some, these new concepts and future plans signal Ford’s commitment to innovation and staying competitive in the rapidly growing electric vehicle sector.
