Development of Mercedes-Benz AMG Electric SUV
Winter Testing to Begin
Boasts 1,000 Horsepower Performance

News1

Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance subsidiary, AMG, has announced the development of an electric SUV based on its proprietary electric vehicle platform, AMG.EA. Unveiled in a teaser image on November 7, the new SUV, dubbed “Born in Affalterbach,” marks AMG’s first self-developed SUV since its founding in 1957.

AMG, renowned for its iconic V8 and V12 engines, is embracing electrification to meet the evolving automotive landscape. The company has already integrated hybrid technology into models like the C63 sports sedan and now appears ready to dive into the high-performance electric vehicle segment with this upcoming model.

Large Electric SUV in Development
A New Iconic Model

The AMG electric SUV, currently under development, will be a large model similar in size to the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class or EQS SUV. While specific details remain scarce, the low roofline and muscular fender design suggest the vehicle is optimized for on-road performance, despite AMG CEO Michael Schiebe describing it as a high-performance off-roader. Given AMG’s history of producing high-performance road-focused cars, the SUV’s primary focus seems to be on-road dynamics, which aligns with the brand’s performance-driven ethos.

This new vehicle will be the sixth model AMG developed entirely, joining the AMG GT, SL, and SLS AMG ranks. The SUV is expected to become another iconic addition to the brand’s lineup, further cementing AMG’s reputation for cutting-edge performance.

Test drive to begin this winter
Scheduled for launch in 2026

Scheduled for test driving starting this winter, the AMG electric SUV is slated for a 2026 launch. It will feature an 800V system and use axial flux motors from YASA, a company acquired by Mercedes-Benz. The vehicle will be powered by four motors, one for each wheel, producing a staggering 1,000 horsepower.

This SUV promises to deliver exhilarating on-road performance thanks to the four-wheel drive and active torque vectoring. It will also have rear-wheel steering, active suspension, and an AMG-specific battery with 40% higher energy density than conventional batteries. The SUV will measure around 5,100 mm (200.8 inches), with a wheelbase of approximately 3,000 mm (118.1 inches), offering substantial interior space to match its impressive exterior.

German Production Planned, but Battery Concerns Linger

The anticipated output of the AMG electric SUV is 972 horsepower with a maximum torque of 163.15 kgf.m, ensuring a performance-driven driving experience. Production will take place in Germany, with high expectations surrounding the SUV’s capabilities. However, the model has raised some concerns, particularly regarding battery safety.

A previous incident involving a large fire in an electric vehicle battery, reportedly linked to Chinese batteries, has led to some uncertainty among consumers. Despite Mercedes-Benz’s assurances that they follow rigorous quality control procedures and closely oversee their suppliers’ production plants, concerns persist. The company has indicated it will likely continue to use Chinese batteries for this model, but it remains to be seen whether this will affect consumer confidence moving forward.

The AMG electric SUV is shaping up to be a game-changer in the high-performance electric vehicle market, combining Mercedes-Benz’s legacy of luxury and power with the future of electrification. However, its final reception will likely depend on how well it can address the concerns raised over its battery safety and production practices.
