China’s Xiaomi SU7 Hits 100,000 Units in Just 230 Days – A New Electric Car Milestone

Car New China

Xiaomi’s debut electric vehicle, the SU7, has made an impressive mark in the automotive world, surpassing 100,000 units in production and sales just 230 days after its launch on March 28. The demand for the SU7 continues to soar, with daily delivery volumes exceeding 1,000 units for the first time on November 13. This unprecedented success has also driven a significant boost in Xiaomi’s stock price on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, which has climbed approximately 90% since the vehicle’s introduction.

This record was achieved faster than the industry leaders, with Li Auto reaching 100,000 units in 1.9 years, Nio and Xpeng reaching 100,000 units in 2.8 years, and Xiaomi achieving this in just 230 days. According to Chinese economic media outlet First Finance, Xiaomi’s monthly production is expected to reach 24,000 units each month and next month.

Scaling Up: Production Expansion and Future SUV Plans

Xiaomi is reportedly running its production lines at full capacity to meet the flood of orders and is reportedly building a second Beijing factory to expand its annual production capacity. The second Beijing factory is scheduled to be completed in June 2025, and full-scale production will begin in July or August of the same year, with plans to produce the follow-up SUV vehicle.

On November 13, Xiaomi Chairman Lei Jun said on his Chinese social media Weibo account, “It is an unprecedented miracle that the production and sales volume exceeded 100,000 units in just 230 days since its launch. “He added, “I would like to thank everyone who supports Xiaomi automobiles. Xiaomi will speed up production and provide the SU7 to consumers as soon as possible.”

Homage to Musk: Lei Jun’s Viral Factory Photo

In celebration of the SU7 reaching 100,000 units, Lei Jun shared a photo of himself apparently sleeping on the factory floor, sparking comparisons to Tesla’s Elon Musk. Musk famously lived in Tesla’s Fremont and Nevada factories during critical production phases. While some see Lei’s gesture as a tribute, others criticize it as an attempt to emulate Musk too closely.

Meanwhile, China continues to dominate the global new energy vehicle (NEV) market. According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, annual production of NEVs surpassed 10 million units for the first time in 2023—a staggering leap from just 18,000 units a decade ago. Experts predict total production will exceed 12 million units by year’s end.

Porsche Taycan Looks at a Budget Price

The Xiaomi SU7, designed by former BMW designer Li Tianyuan, has garnered attention for its sleek design, which resembles the Porsche Taycan. Measuring 4,997 mm (196.7 inches) in length and 1,963 mm (77.3 inches) in width, the SU7 is slightly larger than the Hyundai Sonata and boasts a generous 3,000 mm (118.1 inches) wheelbase.

The base model is powered by a 73.6 kWh CATL lithium iron phosphate battery, delivering a range of up to 700 km (435 miles) under Chinese standards. It produces 300 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.28 seconds. Fast charging at 400V allows it to cover 350 km (217 miles) with just a 15-minute charge. Priced competitively at 215,900 yuan (approximately $29,800), the SU7 offers a compelling mix of performance, design, and affordability.
