Hyundai to produce EREV in the US

Hyundai Motor Group is making waves in the electric vehicle (EV) sector and plans to develop an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) in December 2024. The Genesis GV70 has been chosen as the first EREV model, with prototype production expected later this year. Unlike hybrids, which pair an internal combustion engine with a motor, EREVs are fully electric vehicles that incorporate an internal combustion engine to charge the battery, offering a unique driving experience powered solely by the electric motor.

Hyundai is set to produce the GV70 EREV in the United States starting in the second half of 2026, with sales expected to begin in 2027. The decision to manufacture locally aligns with Hyundai’s strategy, as the US accounts for about half of Hyundai’s global exports. The push for domestic production also responds to former President Trump’s policies. Trump has previously emphasized bringing manufacturing jobs back to the US, including relocating factories from overseas, which may play a role in Hyundai’s shift toward local production.

Competitive Pricing and Performance for the GV70 EREV

The GV70 with EREV is expected to be cheaper than current electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). At the 2024 CES Investor Day, Hyundai Motor Group announced plans to reduce battery capacity by about 30% compared to existing electric vehicles and reduce the number of motors from three to two to lower production costs, thereby increasing price competitiveness.

Among the contents mentioned at the time, it was reported that Hyundai Motor Group was developing a vehicle with a range of over 900 km (559 miles) on a full charge, so it seems that the GV70 EREV model to be launched later will also have a range of over 900 km (559 miles). Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Group is also known to be reviewing the development of the Santa Fe EREV model in addition to the GV70. It is expected to be produced and sold in the US as a US strategic model identical to the GV70.

Facelift and New Features for the GV70 Electrified Model

The Genesis GV70 has recently attracted attention by unveiling a camouflaged facelift of the electrified model. The new GV70 electrified model is the first facelift in about three years since the current model was launched in November 2021. This change heralds significant upgrades such as new headlights and a panoramic display, raising car owners’ expectations even higher.

Spy shots from online communities, such as the South Korean Electric Vehicle Enthusiasts Association, reveal several design changes. The front grille has been replaced with a grid-patterned panel, highlighting its electric powertrain. The new headlamps will be a standout feature, featuring MLA-type LED technology on Genesis flagship models like the G90 and GV80. The updated front bumper’s dynamic air intake further differentiates the electric model from its internal combustion counterpart.

Interior and Exterior Upgrades

On the exterior, the GV70 facelift will feature new twin 5-spoke wheels with a design highlighting Genesis’ signature two-line motif, giving the vehicle a more sporty look. At the rear, the turn signals on the bumper will be integrated with the upper tail lamp, and the rear bumper will sport a cleaner design with two lines for added sophistication.

Inside, the GV70 facelift will feature an all-new steering wheel, a digital instrument panel, and a 27-inch OLED panoramic display that merges the center screen. The updated interior also includes a redesigned center tunnel with horizontal air vents, air conditioning controls, and an electronic dial transmission, reflecting a modern and elegant design similar to the GV70’s previous facelift. These updates are expected to elevate the GV70’s status as a top contender in the luxury EV market.
