Daihatsu’s innovative approach has captured attention in the mini-vehicle market with the Mud Master C, a concept vehicle introduced at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. As outdoor activities like car camping grow in popularity, compact vehicles are increasingly becoming part of the adventure, and the Mud Master C was ahead of its time in addressing the needs of off-road enthusiasts.
While the Daihatsu Hijet mini truck remains iconic in production since the 1960s, the Mud Master C represents a unique leap forward. Designed as a small commercial van optimized for off-road driving, the Mud Master C remains a fascinating concept that hints at the potential for such vehicles in today’s outdoor-driven culture.
Unique Drive System and Impressive Ground Clearance
The Mud Master C stands out not just for its design but also for its remarkable drivetrain. Unlike typical vehicles where the drive shaft is centered at the wheel, this concept uses a “hub reduction system,” placing a gear between the drive shaft and the wheel hub. This design, also used in heavy-duty vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz Unimog, allows the Mud Master C to achieve an impressive 370 mm (14.6 inches) of ground clearance with just 16-inch tires—an extraordinary figure for a vehicle of this size.
The Mud Master C’s compact dimensions are also worth noting: it measures 3,395 mm (133.7 inches) in length, 1,600 mm (63.0 inches) in width, and 1,960 mm (77.2 inches) in height, with a 1,900 mm (74.8 inches) wheelbase. Although its width exceeds the Kei vehicle standard, the Mud Master C remains within the regulations for mini vehicles due to its 660cc engine displacement.
Futuristic and Functional Interior Design
The interior pursues extreme simplicity while also having a futuristic look. The panoramic display, where the instrument panel and center screen are connected as one, catches the eye. This element is commonly seen in cars today, but surprisingly, this design was applied 17 years ago, considering it is a concept car. The clutch pedal and shift lever show that a 5-speed manual transmission is installed.
The rear cabin is dedicated to cargo space, with a gull-wing tailgate providing ample access. Designed with cyclists in mind, the space accommodates two bicycles and has specialized equipment for loading and unloading. This collaboration with professional cyclist Suzuki Raita highlights the vehicle’s focus on outdoor sports and versatility.
Modular Design for Versatility
The Mud Master C’s modular design allows it to be customized for various uses. While it was initially conceptualized as a commercial van, the body-on-frame construction and short wheelbase offer the flexibility to adapt to different configurations, such as an open-bed truck. The vehicle’s design prioritizes off-road capability with ample approach, departure, and ramp angles, enhancing its off-road performance and durability.
Despite its practicality and design innovation, the Mud Master C never made it to production, though it was hinted at during its reveal that it could be mass-produced. Given the current trend of outdoor hobbies and compact adventure vehicles, there’s no doubt that a production version of the Mud Master C could enjoy significant popularity in today’s market.
