BMW’s upcoming electric SUV, the iX3, has stirred mixed reactions after renderings showcasing its design were released. The iX3, produced in Mexico starting in 2027, is an all-electric version of the brand’s X3 SUV, offering a stark departure from its internal combustion engine predecessor. While some enthusiasts welcomed the new look, many consumers were left puzzled, with criticism pouring in online.

Reactions to the renderings have been notably harsh, with comments like “Is this the best design?” “It looks like a nostril,” and “Why did the design suddenly regress like this?” Consumers were quick to express their disappointment, questioning the aesthetics of the electric SUV.

New Design Unveiled at Paris Motor Show

In the case of this iX3, BMW has applied the Vision Neue Klasse X design that was previously introduced at the Paris Motor Show. The Vision Neue Klasse X is characterized by a narrow and vertically elongated kidney grille design. The tailgate features an angular shape that provides a solid and strong feel. The vertical graphic at the bottom makes the vehicle look taller.

The headlamps using the front-slit design are long and stretched left and right. The daytime running lights have two diagonal lines, and LED lights are applied on the inside. At first glance, this appearance reminds me of BMW’s popular model X5 full change. The side aerodynamic design is noticeable. As it is an electric vehicle, BMW’s efforts to reduce the influence of air can be seen. The pop-up door handles are smooth and minimize air resistance.

Interior and Powertrain Performance

Though the interior design has not been revealed, industry experts speculate it will be similar to the Vision Neue Klasse X concept. Expectations include a large center display, a panoramic sunroof, and a heads-up display (HUD) for an immersive driving experience. The iX3 is expected to offer sporty performance, which aligns with its exterior design, though specifics remain limited.

Regarding powertrain performance, the iX3 will offer both single-motor and dual-motor configurations, with output ranging from 300 to 600 horsepower. The estimated combined range is around 800 km (497 miles), significantly improving over previous models. However, whether the iX3 will meet this range target remains to be seen.
