Lancia, an iconic Italian automaker established in 1906, has been part of the automotive landscape for over 100 years. Though the brand is relatively unfamiliar to many, particularly in the U.S., Lancia is a luxury name under Stellantis. The company made its mark with innovative designs and engineering, but its influence waned significantly in the 1980s due to global challenges. By the 2000s, Lancia’s presence had diminished to the point where it was reduced to little more than a name, leaving it mainly obscure to modern consumers.

One of Lancia’s most renowned models is the Aurelia, introduced in 1950. This flagship vehicle was known for its advanced engineering and success in motorsports. However, after just eight years of production, the Aurelia was discontinued following the launch of its successor, the Flaminia. Recently, the brand has unveiled a concept car that reimagines the classic Aurelia for a new era, sparking renewed interest and excitement among automotive enthusiasts.

What makes the Lancia Aurelia so special?

The Aurelia, released in 1950, was Lancia’s flagship model. Its name is said to have been derived from the road from Rome to Pisa. It was one of the first mass-produced models to be equipped with a V6 engine, and there were four displacements: 1.8 liters, 2.0 liters, 2.3 liters, and 2.5 liters. As for the transmission, there was only one 4-speed manual transmission.

The model was initially launched as a sedan but later expanded to include coupe and convertible variants. However, in 1957, the Flaminia succeeded the Aurelia, and production ceased by 1958.

A Modern Reinterpretation of the Aurelia

The concept car that reinterprets the classic Lancia Aurelia in a modern context has recently captured global attention. This new concept embodies the essence of the original model while infusing contemporary design elements that reflect sharp angles and smooth curves. Like its predecessor, the concept car’s design features a long nose and short deck reminiscent of sports cars. The front section emphasizes angular lines, while the rear uses flowing curves. The wheels are designed with an old-style grille, further accentuating the vintage and modern aesthetics blend.

This concept has resonated positively with audiences, with many seeing it as the perfect vehicle for Lancia’s revival. One user, impressed by the design, suggested that if the car were to go into mass production, it could help reestablish the brand’s position in the global automobile market.

Currently, Lancia is preparing to launch the Gamma

While the concept car has sparked excitement, Lancia is also focusing on revitalizing its lineup. The brand currently produces only the Ypsilon, and to ensure its future, Lancia is working on a new model—the second-generation Gamma. Introduced initially between 1976 and 1984, the Gamma was a fastback model, and the latest iteration is set to follow a similar design philosophy but with a fully electric powertrain. Unlike its predecessors, the new Gamma will not feature any internal combustion engine variants.

The Gamma electric sedan will offer an impressive driving range of up to 700 km (435 miles) on a single charge. Set to launch in 2026, the new Gamma will serve as Lancia’s flagship model, marking a significant step in the brand’s electric future. A teaser image of the rear view was recently released, giving a glimpse into this much-anticipated model’s sleek, modern design. As Lancia moves forward with its electric vision, the Gamma is poised to play a key role in reestablishing the brand’s presence in the luxury vehicle market.
