China’s Automotive Industry Continues to Advance
New Sports Car Makes a Splash
Unveiling the Powerhouse Behind This Impressive Vehicle
China’s automotive sector has experienced rapid growth, challenging established global players and reshaping the industry. Among the latest advancements is the RoboX, an electric supercar from Jidu Auto (Ji Yue), which has captured international attention for its impressive design and performance.
Jidu Auto, a joint venture between Baidu and Geely Auto, has been pushing the boundaries of automotive innovation. Led by Frank Wu, a former designer for Cadillac at General Motors, the RoboX exemplifies Jidu’s forward-thinking approach. Wu, known for his work on five Cadillac models, has infused the RoboX with futuristic design and technology, positioning it as a true contender in the electric vehicle market.
China’s Design Revolution: Senior Designers Leading the Charge
Just a few years ago, Chinese vehicles were often associated with being inexpensive or subpar. However, Chinese automakers have redefined the narrative today, with designs and technologies rivaling the world’s leading car manufacturers. One of the driving forces behind this transformation is the strategic recruitment of top global talent. Senior designers from renowned automakers are now playing pivotal roles in shaping the future of Chinese car brands.
Speaking to Chinese media, Frank Wu expressed his vision of creating a design that integrates cutting-edge technology and serves people like “robots.” He said his mission is to make Jidu a symbol of China’s industrial design excellence on the global stage. Wu’s ambition is reflected in the RoboX, which incorporates the latest technology to enhance efficiency and convenience for its drivers.
RoboX: A Supercar Built for the AI Era
At the 2024 Guangzhou Auto Show, Jidu Auto unveiled the RoboX, an electric supercar that merges luxury design with groundbreaking AI capabilities. With a “Less is More” philosophy, the RoboX integrates sensors, cameras, and other components into the car’s functional AI system, SIMO. This design ensures a seamless driving experience, positioning the RoboX as an ideal vehicle for the AI-driven future.
The RoboX also incorporates autonomous driving technology from Baidu’s Apollo system, marking a significant leap in AI innovation. With Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities, the RoboX can navigate a racetrack autonomously, setting a new benchmark for hypercar technology.
Autonomous Driving Capabilities and Award-Winning Design
With a perfect 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution, the RoboX has an aerodynamic drag coefficient of just 0.198 through several aero devices, including aero shield rims and active spoilers. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 1.9 seconds. Its most innovative feature is using Baidu’s Apollo technology for autonomous driving. The vehicle has a system that can drive autonomously on a racetrack, marking the first application of Level 4 autonomous driving technology to a hypercar.
The RoboX, equipped with fantastic performance and technology, started pre-sales after being unveiled at the Guangzhou Auto Show. The actual launch is expected to be in 2027. Jidu Auto and Frank Wu unveiled the RoboX with design skills that are as good as those of imported vehicles. Frank Wu received the Red Dot and German Design Award for this model.
