Toyota, New Prius
Surprisingly Emerges as a Coupe Model?
Toyota Acknowledges Its Impressive Quality
At the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon, a standout exhibit caught the attention of attendees: the 650 Vision presented by the Gunma Automobile University (GAUS) Customization Department. This unique vehicle, based on the existing Toyota Prius (60 type), featured a dramatic transformation that left many rethinking the Prius’s potential. With its sleek two-door coupe body and a stylish front-end design, the 650 Vision presents a bold new direction for the iconic hybrid.
The vehicle’s front design, which initially sparked debate when the Prius was first launched, has been updated with horizontal tail lights inspired by the Lexus IS. This alteration, coupled with a completely reworked side silhouette, gives the impression of a Prius Coupe, blending practicality with sporty appeal.
Fourth-Generation Integra Type R
A Unique Design Based on a Classic
The 650 Vision draws inspiration from the fourth-generation Acura Integra Type R (DC5), known for its sharp styling. The students behind the design of this vehicle sought to combine elements of the past with a modern, futuristic flair. They seamlessly integrated the front headlights of the Prius with the taillights of the later Lexus IS model, offering a fresh take on Toyota’s design language.
The car’s exterior is enhanced by aggressive Work Meister L1 wheels—9J inset -7 in the front and 10J inset -24 in the rear—creating a more dynamic stance. Ploom AIRLIFT air suspension further elevates the vehicle, allowing the ride height to be adjusted on the go, ensuring both practical and visual appeal.
Reviving Early 2000s Style
Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda’s Seal of Approval
Inside, the 650 Vision pays homage to early 2000s compact sports cars with a design inspired by the Integra. The trunk area is fitted with a woofer, speakers, and an iPad, offering a nostalgic nod to the era’s custom car culture. The name “650 Vision” cleverly combines elements from the Prius (60), the Integra (DC5), and the retro-inspired Lexus 1S250/350, evoking both the past and a forward-looking vision for the future.
Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda approved the 650 Vision by signing the front bonnet. This gesture further solidified the car’s unique place in Toyota’s history. The 650 Vision is the first Prius Coupe to receive Toyota’s official certification, making it a true milestone for the brand and a significant highlight of the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon.
