South Korea’s No. 1 Auto Brand, Hyundai Recalls 200,000 Vehicles
Due to Unexpected Rearview Camera Issues
Hyundai has issued a recall for 226,118 vehicles in the U.S. due to a defect in the rearview camera system that obstructs the driver’s view, violating Federal Motor Carrier Safety Standard 111. The defect prevents the rear camera from functioning properly, which could compromise safety by impairing the driver’s ability to see what is behind the vehicle.
The recalled vehicles include the 2021-2022 Santa Fe (base and hybrid models), the 2022 Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid, and the 2021-2022 Elantra. The 2022 Elantra N is also included in the recall, with approximately 1,186 units affected.
Hyundai’s Largest Recall of 2024
This is the largest recall Hyundai has conducted this year. Hyundai previously recalled 186,588 units from the 2015-2016 Elantra. That recall was due to a faulty emergency trunk release mechanism that failed to function properly, making it impossible to open the trunk in an emergency.
Hyundai also recently recalled 145,235 electric vehicles. The recall affected the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and Genesis electric versions of GV60, GV70, and G80 due to a defect in the integrated charge control unit that could cause a sudden loss of power.
Hyundai’s Recall Scale Compared to Industry Giants
While this recall is a major event for Hyundai in terms of scale, it is considered relatively small compared to other global auto brands as of 2024. For example, Stellantis and Ford each recalled more than 1 million vehicles this year, much larger than Hyundai’s.
Stellantis and Ford’s massive recalls are due to severe defects in specific models, which have a wide-ranging impact. Hyundai Motor Company is prioritizing consumer safety through this recall incident while also pledging to conduct more thorough quality management in the future.
Hyundai’s Commitment to Quality and Consumer Safety
Through this recall, Hyundai has shown its intention to strengthen consumer protection. The company will send related notices to owners of vehicles affected by the recall and provide free repair services. In addition, Hyundai plans to inspect the rearview camera systems of the recalled vehicles and replace necessary parts to improve safety.
In the case of this recall, Hyundai emphasizes the need to pay more attention to quality and safety, as it is related to the rear camera, which is an important safety device in the vehicle. Hyundai will continue to improve quality to minimize such problems in the future and provide more trust to consumers.
