Honda’s Popular SUVs: Passport and Pilot
Face Shock Due to Recent Fire Defect
Honda has announced a recall of 205,760 Passport and Pilot SUVs across the US after discovering a defect in the fuel filler port. This defect could increase the risk of fire in a crash.
According to a recall notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the connection between the fuel filler neck and the fuel filler pipe may be incomplete. Honda explained that the two parts could separate in a crash, potentially causing a fuel leak and fire. The problem may result from a sequence error during the fuel line assembly process, resulting in an incomplete connection.
Honda Passport and Pilot: What Caused the Issue?
The recall affects 2023-2024 Honda Passport models manufactured between February 15, 2023, and May 13, 2024, and 2023-2025 Honda Pilot models manufactured between February 14, 2023, and May 8, 2024.
Honda believes that the cause of this defect is likely an installation sequence error that occurred during the fuel pipe assembly process. This error weakened the connection between the two parts, increasing the risk of an accident.

Honda’s Response Sparks Interest
Honda said that after a dealer discovered the issue during a pre-delivery inspection on May 13, 2024, an internal investigation confirmed the same defect in six vehicles in the warehouse. Fortunately, no injuries or fires have been reported to date.
Honda notified dealers of the recall on December 3 and will formally notify owners starting January 6, 2025. Honda plans to inspect affected vehicles and make repairs by properly securing the fuel filler neck to the fuel filler tube.

What Have Past Cases Looked Like?
This recall is one of Honda’s recent fire-related recalls. In late October, more than 720,000 vehicles were recalled due to possible cracks in the high-pressure fuel pump.
There are concerns that Honda’s safety management needs to be continuously inspected, as the issue could potentially cause fuel leaks or fires. Honda is currently recommending that owners promptly undergo inspections and repairs according to Honda’s official instructions.
