Tesla Roadster Redesign Delayed for Seven Years
Impatient Fan Builds His Own ‘CyberRoadster’
Tesla’s Roadster, not the Model S, is the first mass-produced vehicle. Initially introduced in 2008 and based on the Lotus Elise, it earned its place as the world’s first electric sports car. Tesla has been working on a redesigned version of the Roadster since unveiling a prototype in 2017, but fans have faced repeated delays in its release.
One Tesla enthusiast, unable to wait any longer, decided to take matters into his own hands. David Andreyev, the creator behind the YouTube channel Cyber Hooligan, spent the last two years developing a one-of-a-kind CyberRoadster. His nearly finished creation has captured widespread attention online.
Built from the Bones of a Wrecked Model 3
A Complete Overhaul Inspired by Cybertruck and Corvette
Andreyev’s CyberRoadster started life as a severely damaged Tesla Model 3. The vehicle underwent a radical transformation after being stripped of its original body panels. The design blends elements from Tesla’s Cybertruck with sharp character lines reminiscent of a sports coupe. While it carries the Roadster name, the custom build is a unique two-door coupe with a futuristic front light strip inspired by Tesla’s Cybertruck.
Andreyev replaced the hood, fenders, bumpers, and most exterior panels to rebuild the car. Drawing inspiration from vehicles like the Corvette, the design reflects bold, angular lines that set it apart from any standard Tesla model. The project involved extensive fabrication, with many panels made in-house.
Custom Parts and Unexpected Donors: Lexus and Toyota Join the Mix
The main body shape, including the roof line, has been completely changed, and the windshield is equipped with a custom-made part. Extensive modification work was also done to the rear of the body to create a unified design. As it is a two-door concept, the two rear doors were boldly removed, and a new rear quarter panel was applied. In addition to the body panels made in-house, parts from other vehicles, such as Lexus and Toyota, were also applied in this process.
The charging port location has also been moved to the top of the rear bumper for a sleek design. In addition, horizontal lights are implemented with LED light strips, and parts from the 2023 Lexus LX600 are applied to the rear. The RSR lowering kit was used to lower the ride height by 1.5 inches (approximately 38 mm) for the suspension. The 20-inch (about 508 mm) Rohana RC7 wheels were applied to complete the sports car stance.
Musk’s Vision for the New Roadster: Rockets Included
In terms of powertrain, it uses the same one as the existing Model 3 Performance. The combined total output is 487 horsepower, the maximum torque is 65.2 kgf.m, and it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds. If the body was lighter during the production of the Cyber Roadster, we can expect even faster acceleration performance. David explained that the CyberRoadster project cost $ 50,000. The only thing left is the interior modification.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk has made headlines by announcing that Tesla will mount SpaceX’s small rockets on the new Roadster. He says that he plans to secure innovative performance by mounting rockets on all sides of the vehicle, including acceleration, braking, and cornering.
