The global political landscape is tilting to the right. Amid a worldwide increase in refugees and severe inflation, far-right worldviews promoting nationalism are spreading. This led to speculation that former U.S. President Donald Trump might return to the White House next year.

According to CNN on the 19th (local time), far-right sentiment armed with extreme rhetoric and nationalism is sweeping across the globe. Far-right parties promoting anti-immigration sentiment are rising in the European political arena, which traditionally values tolerance and diversity. Voters elected far-right Javier Milei, known as “Argentina’s Trump,” as president of Argentina. In the U.S., staunch Trump supporter and hardline conservative Mike Johnson won the election as the Speaker of the House. Making him to become the third-highest position in the power hierarchy. Trump is currently polling higher than President Joe Biden.

Economic Factors Fueling Far-Right Sentiment

CNN identified the cause of this phenomenon as economic. After the COVID-19 pandemic, prices soared, and refugees flooded in amid uncertain economic conditions, such as the war in Europe and the Middle East. Estimates indicate that this year’s number of asylum seekers alone will reach 1 million. He estimated that accepting refugees has exacerbated the shortage of public services, already saturated due to COVID-19. Also, it influenced the rise in rents. In this flow, far-right populist parties are expanding their power by promoting ‘anti-immigrant sentiment.’

Former President Trump is also courting voters with strong anti-immigration policies and extreme rhetoric. Trump promised, “If I win the presidential election next year, I will carry out the largest domestic deportation operation in U.S. history.” He said that “illegal immigrants are polluting the blood of America” and even compared immigrants to the fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter.

The hearts of Americans are also turning towards former President Trump. In five recent major polls, Trump led President Biden by 2 to 4 percentage points. Although it is within the margin of error, it is rare for a current president to lose in all major polls, according to foreign media. In the expected economic slowdown next year, policies prioritizing national interests are gaining favor.

Concerns About Polarizing Politics and Divisiveness

The problem is that the rise of these far-right forces is not simply a matter of political ideology, but is combined with populist politics filled with hatred and exclusivism. There is growing concern that divisive politics will accelerate as far-right parties promoting anti-immigrant sentiment and figures famous for their aggressive and rough rhetoric, like former President Trump and President-elect Milei, lead this trend.

The business world is also joining the “right-click craze.” Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and considered the world’s richest person, congratulated Argentina on the election results on his owned platform X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Argentina’s prosperity has been brought forward.”
