“Biden and Milei spoke for approximately 6 minutes”
Blinken “expects cooperation on common priorities”
President Joe Biden of the United States congratulated Javier Milei, the winner of the Argentine presidential election, via phone call.
According to Voice of America (VOA) and other sources on the 22nd (local time), the White House stated in a release, “President Biden spoke with President-elect Milei and congratulated him, discussing the importance of continuously building strong bilateral relations.”
Bloomberg quoted a high-ranking U.S. official saying, “President Biden and President-elect Milei spoke for approximately 6 minutes.”
Earlier on the 19th, U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken also stated in a release following Milei’s victory, “This election was a testament to Argentina’s electoral and democratic institutions,” and “The United States is looking forward to working with President-elect Milei and his government on shared priorities.”
President-elect Milei, often called “Argentina’s Donald Trump,” has a far-right tilt. As Argentina’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 142.7% compared to the same month last year, public dissatisfaction over the current left-wing government’s economic incompetence grew, and he drew attention by proposing somewhat radical promises such as the consolidation of government departments, closure of the central bank, and introduction of the dollar.
