Trump’s Dictatorship Comments Resurface
Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who stirred controversy with his comments about becoming a dictator on his first day of re-election, has once again mentioned becoming a dictator. Some are concerned that dictatorship could become a reality if Trump succeeds in his second term.
Politico reported on the 10th that former President Trump, speaking at a New York Republican Party gala dinner the previous evening, refuted a claim by The New York Times, asserting, “The New York Times reported today that I want to become a dictator, but I didn’t say that.”
He emphasized he only wants to be a “dictator for one day” to secure the southern border and begin drilling in the U.S.
Motivation Behind Dictatorship Remark
Former President Trump stated his intention to rescue America from its current hardships, describing his presidential campaign as a legitimate crusade to save the country from a corrupt political faction.
Previously, former President Trump made a dictator comment on Fox News on the 5th. In response to claims by some Democrats and Republicans about the risk of dictatorship if re-elected, he joked, “‘You’re not going to be a dictator, are you?’ No, no, no, other than day one.” He added, “We’re closing the border, and we’re drilling, drilling, drilling. After that, I’m not a dictator.”
Political Responses
The Biden campaign, led by strategy manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez, has actively incorporated Trump’s remarks into their campaign narrative. Rodriguez criticized Trump in a statement, highlighting his intentions if re-elected. She stated that Trump made it clear he would adopt a dictatorial approach from the first day of his potential term, urging Americans to take his words seriously.
On the other hand, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican, defended former President Trump. In an interview broadcast on that day, McCarthy, a supporter of Trump, addressed the CBS host’s suggestion that Americans might be concerned about the rise of a dictator or fascist following Trump’s remarks. McCarthy responded straightforwardly to this notion: “I don’t think so.” However, he added, “What President Trump needs to do in this campaign is rebuilding, restoring, and renewing America. It can’t be about revenge.”
