On the 10th, South Korea’s Minister of National Defense, Shin Won-sik, mentioned North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s public threat to “destroy South Korea” and declared his intention to strengthen security cooperation among South Korea, the U.S., and Japan.Minister Shin, speaking at the 12th International Conference of the Korea National Strategy Institute and the U.S. Brookings Institute held at The Plaza Hotel Seoul in Jung-gu, Seoul, said, “We are currently facing the most serious global security situation since the Cold War.”Minister Shin diagnosed, “As strategic competition between the U.S. and China intensifies, the division between the blocs of liberal democracy and authoritarianism is accelerating. China is strengthening its alliance with Russia and North Korea, and military cooperation between Russia and North Korea is also becoming more solid.”

He continued, “North Korea is seriously threatening the security of the entire world by enhancing its nuclear and missile capabilities, and is continuously escalating the crisis through actions such as the declaration of the abolition of the 9.19 military agreement and coastal artillery firing in the zone of cessation of hostile activities.”

He pointed out, “This morning, Kim Jong Un openly threatened to destroy South Korea by mobilizing all means and capabilities.”

Minister Shin stated, “South Korea is realizing ‘peace through strength’ through solidarity with the U.S. alliance and value-sharing countries. We are dramatically strengthening the execution power of ‘Extended Deterrence Together with the U.S.’ such as the deployment of U.S. strategic assets and nuclear consultation groups.”

He added, “Security cooperation among the three countries has become stronger since the ‘Camp David Declaration’ among the leaders of South Korea, the U.S., and Japan. We are accelerating security cooperation through the operation of a real-time missile warning information sharing system among North Korea and the trilateral training of South Korea, the U.S., and Japan.”

Minister Shin emphasized, “The South Korea-U.S. alliance and South Korea-U.S.-Japan cooperation are exemplary cases of international solidarity aiming for universal human values and a rules-based international order. We will further develop security cooperation among the three countries in various fields in the future.”

The Workers’ Party newspaper and the Korean Central News Agency reported that Kim Jong Un mentioned during his on-site guidance of key military factories on the 8th and 9th, “We will not unilaterally decide on a major accident on the Korean Peninsula by our overwhelming power against the South Korean people, but we also have no intention of avoiding war.”

Kim Jong Un threatened, “If South Korea dares to contemplate using force or threatens our sovereignty and safety, we will not hesitate to mobilize all means and capabilities at our disposal to completely destroy South Korea.”
