According to Reuters, Tsai told the U.S. delegation that her administration will continue to safeguard the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait.

She also expressed gratitude for the U.S.’s support for Taiwan’s democracy.

The U.S. delegation, including former Secretary of State James Steinberg and former National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley, visited Taiwan the day after the presidential election ended on the 14th.

Their visit is interpreted as reflecting the U.S.’s will to strengthen relations with Taiwan and support Tsai, who has a pro-U.S. and independent stance, in the aftermath of the Taiwan election, which was characterized as a ‘proxy war’ between the U.S. and China.

Tsai Ing-wen won the presidential election held on the 13th, defeating the ‘pro-China’ candidate, Hou Yu-i of the Kuomintang. She will be inaugurated as the 16th president of Taiwan in May.
