Former President Donald Trump received a warning that he could be expelled from the court for continuously making mocking remarks about the testimony of his opponent in the lawsuit.
According to reports from the New York Times (NYT) and other US media on the 17th (local time), former President Trump attended a civil lawsuit for defamation in the Southern District Court of New York and heard the testimony of fashion columnist E. Jean Carroll, who filed a lawsuit against him.
The trial was held for the first time with both Trump and Carroll, the parties to the lawsuit, in attendance.
During the morning, former President Trump repeatedly shook his head as if Carroll’s words were false and continued to complain in a voice loud enough for the jury to hear.
In response, the plaintiff’s attorney requested the judge to caution Trump for making mocking remarks such as “false” or “seems like she just remembered” according to Carroll’s testimony.
Judge Kaplan pointed out to former President Trump, “I request that you pay special attention to lowering your voice so that the jury does not hear when consulting with your attorney.”
However, even after such an order, the same behavior continued, and the judge sternly warned former President Trump that he could be expelled from the court.
Judge Kaplan said, “Mr. Trump has the right to be here, but if he interferes with the trial as I have been informed, he may lose that right,” adding, “I hope not to consider excluding you from the trial.”
In response, former President Trump shook his head, raised both hands, and sarcastically replied, “That would be nice.”
Upon hearing this, Judge Kaplan fired back, “I know you want that. You can’t control yourself.” Trump retorted, “You can’t control it either,” openly expressing his distrust of the judge.
Meanwhile, Carroll claimed in her testimony before the jury that her reputation and life were shattered and she was suffering from various threats because former President Trump called her sexual assault allegations false 26 times.
Carroll is a person who has claimed that former President Trump sexually assaulted her in a dressing room of a department store in Manhattan, New York in the mid-1990s.
In the first trial, the jury found that the claim that former President Trump sexually abused and assaulted Carroll was consistent with the facts. However, the jury judged that Carroll did not provide evidence of sexual assault.
Even after losing the sexual assault case last May, Carroll filed a separate defamation lawsuit against former President Trump for damaging her reputation in media interviews and on social media.
