President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have started to politicize the issue of women’s rights to abort pregnancy ahead of the full-scale re-election race. The abortion issue was a destructive issue during the midterm elections in November 2022, and the Biden camp is hoping for a unifying effect among Democratic supporters in this year’s election.
On the 22nd (local time), marking the 51st anniversary of the ‘Roe vs. Wade’, the White House announced additional measures to ensure access to contraception and abortion drugs, and emergency abortions at the federal government level.
In this measure, the federal government has provided extra guidance to expand access to free contraception devices and implement mandatory notifications related to free contraception to insurance companies. The National Department of Health and Human Services(HHS) plans to establish a dedicated team to encourage emergency abortion procedures in all federal hospitals, including 21 states in the United States that have effectively banned abortion.
In a statement on that day, President Biden said, “Fifty-one years ago today, the Supreme Court recognized a woman’s constitutional right to make deeply personal decisions with her doctor—free from the interference of politicians. Then, a year and a half ago, the Court overturned. Because of Republican elected officials, women’s health and lives are at risk. Roe and take away a constitutional right.” He added, “As a result, tens of millions of women now live in states with extreme and dangerous abortion bans,” and pointed out that “women’s health and lives are at risk because of Republican officials.”

President Biden also criticized, “Even as Americans—from Ohio to Kentucky to Michigan to Kansas to California—have resoundingly rejected attempts to limit reproductive freedom, Republican elected officials continue to push for a national ban and devastating new restrictions across the country.”
President Biden and the First Lady, with Vice President Harris and her husband, plan to attend an event for guaranteeing the right to abortion in Virginia on the 23rd and spotlight the issue again. The 23rd is when the primary election is held in New Hampshire, and former President Donald Trump and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley will compete. Apart from this, Vice President Harris embarked on a national tour related to the issue of abortion rights, focusing on a few states like Wisconsin, a battleground state that will determine this year’s election.
The New York Times (NYT) reported, “Wisconsin, where Biden won by a margin of 26,000 votes in 2020, will play a decisive role in this year’s re-election too. At the same time, it is a target of former President Trump, who is trying to spread suspicions for unfounded election.” Vice President Harris, who visited Wisconsin, said, “Extremists are trying to push us back, but we can’t do that,” referring to former President Trump.
