As the U.S. presidential election approaches, Joe Biden and Donald Trump seem to be the main candidates, but some analysts propose that Nikki Haley, a former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and a Republican primary candidate, might be a more viable option as a backup candidate in case Trump, who is currently facing trial, is unable to participate in the race.
On the 30th (local time), Yahoo News released the results of a poll conducted with pollster YouGov from the 25th to the 29th, surveying 1,594 American adults. The outlet analyzed that the positions of both President Biden and former President Trump have become more solid among their supporters based on this survey.
First, Trump received 79% support from Republican voters willing to participate in the primary, a 9-point increase from the 70% he received in a survey last December. Haley, who remains a candidate in the Republican Party along with Trump, received 14% support, a 5-point drop from the 19% she received in the December survey.
The Democratic Party is also coalescing around President Biden as their candidate. The survey results revealed that 74% of Democratic voters willing to participate in the primary support President Biden, a 6-point increase from 68% in December of last year.
The assessment of each candidate’s suitability for the presidency is also increasing. 33% of respondents believed President Biden is suitable for another term as president, while 56% disagreed. This shows an increase in suitability and a decrease in unsuitability compared to November’s results, which showed 27% unsuitable and 60% suitable.
The evaluation of former President Trump showed a similar trend. 48% of respondents thought Trump was unsuitable for the presidency, while 45% thought he was suitable. This is a change from the November survey, where 50% responded as unsuitable and 41% as suitable.
According to a recent poll, 44% of voters consider President Biden’s health issues to be a more serious concern, while 44% believe that former President Trump’s criminal charges are of greater importance. The poll suggests that voters are increasingly coming together to support the candidates they believe have a better chance of winning.
The survey result has narrowed Haley’s position in the ongoing Republican primary. The survey revealed that 66% of Republican voters, or two-thirds, want Haley to step down and allow Trump to become the Republican candidate. Only 28% responded that they want Haley to remain a candidate.
The outlet advised, “If Haley wants to stay in the race, defining her candidacy as a ‘Plan B’ in case something happens to Trump could be a more welcome approach for Republican voters.”
48% of Republican voters responded that it is important to have an alternative to Trump, who is currently on trial. 46% responded that having an alternative is not important.
